Intensive Urban Gardening is a special approach to maximizing the vegetable
output from small areas of land in a town or city where space is limited.
Rose Lord, a practitioner and teacher of intensive gardening, will lead the
hands-on session which will result in a functional 4 by 4 foot vegetable
garden.

Quoting from the website of the Inter-American Development Bank, "Using an
intensive technique known as "square foot gardening, they plant a variety of
crops, including carrots and lettuce, on small pieces of land (4ft. by
4ft.), divided into 16 one foot squares. Each square is planted with a
different crop and as the squares are harvested, more compost is added to
the soil and new seeds are sown. This very productive process doesn't
require much space, water or strenuous labor."

Ms. Lord was invited by Susan Cardoza of The Green Bough in Irwin and
sponsored by the Irwin Business & Professional Association, an
All-Volunteer, non-profit group. Permission to use the Bell Park was
approved by the Borough of Irwin Council.

"Irwin, as a classic small town, is the perfect place to show this
technique," said Michael Pochan, secretary of the IBPA. "Hopefully people
from all around Westmoreland County who live in towns or have limited space
to grow will come to learn how to do this. Mayor Dan Rose already promised
to eat all the onions grown."
